Set up!

I've been a fan of the series since 2007, where I first discovered Nanoha through a Super Robot Wars forum, where certain characters of the show were being mentioned as homages to things from SRW. Back then, I held a disdain toward mahou shoujo or other "girly" series, but the idea of one such show incorporating such elements really piqued my curiosity; plus I rather liked the design of Fate and Signum that had been shown. So, I started watching the series from the very beginning; this was one of, if not the first, anime I watched by downloading it via torrent.

I was warned about the slow start of the first season, but I soldiered through it as I knew the characters I was interested in only came later on. Yet, I found that I really liked Nanoha herself as well. And when Fate arrived, she soared above my expectations. Once I finished the first season, I had really enjoyed myself and loved both characters, along with Arf and Yuuno. To think my expectations would be further exceeded by A's. Nanoha A's by far is one of my favorite anime seasons of all time. However, I was hesitant about StrikerS; I had heard not-very-pleasant things about it, and I was not sure I would enjoy the characters becoming adults already; I wanted to see more of their adventures as they were like in A's. I tried watching some of StrikerS, but just felt little interest in going past A's and thus dropped it by the third episode.

With little other options I knew of to continue my fandom, my passionate love of the show became an idle love, and it went on the backburner for the next several years. Then Nanoha the Movie 1st came out, and not too long later I watched that and found the love again. I bought several figures, participated in many a forum discussion about the show, and even read some fanworks and doujins. But things went idle again, and for the next five years I just left the series hanging dimly in the back of my mind. I didn't even really pay attention when ViVid came out.

Then we come to this year, 2017. I had just seen Youjo Senki. Previously, I had seen shows like Strike Witches. And I suddenly remembered, there was a reason I was drawn to these shows about magical girls that flew through the sky and gratuitously blew things up. It was Nanoha. "It's been ten years now, I should rewatch the show for old time's sake."

And y'know, the way you know you truly love a series, is when you come back and rewatch it years later, that fanboyish passionate love you had for the series bursts back up like you were watching it for the first time. I marathoned the first season, A's, and both movies within a couple days. Riding this Nanoha high, I dove into StrikerS; my tastes had changed enough that I was willing to give it a chance. And boy, I wish I had given it a chance the first time. Nanoha's relationship with Vivio is my second-most favorite in the series behind Nanoha and Fate, and I cried at Nanoha pouring her heart out to Vivio in the finale.

So StrikerS was great! Surely, Nanoha ViVid would be great too! I made a mistake. I am divided on ViVid. Some elements I liked(Einhart, Corona, and their fight at the end of the season, seeing Nanoha, Fate and Vivio as a family) but others I really didn't(Vivio as a main character, the way veteran characters were handled such as during the mock battle, the lack of gravity and pathos that the previous 3 seasons held.) ViVid has taken a pretty solid spot as the bottom of the stack of Nanoha shows.

ViVid Strike on the other hand, felt like a good return to form. Sure, it wasn't Nanoha and Fate, and the execution was rocky, but it filled that void. And it helped make Vivio a more likable character for me; her fight with Rinne was probably my favorite scene out of either ViVids.

And now we come to today, standing on this mountain of hype mixed with trepidation. ViVid season 2 is still yet to come, Nanoha Reflection is coming to the US in a few months, and then there's Detonation next year. It seems like... fate, to have come back to the series at such a moment. I truly hope this leads to other old Nanoha fans coming back into the fray, and for new fans to be introduced to such a wonderful series.

That's my story. A small story, but a precious one of how I came to know and love this series.

Welcome Seraphil, I'm glad you're enjoying the series again. I don't know if you only watched the Vivid anime, but the manga covers much more story and is overall better in case that you're interested.

I'm more of a "watch the anime" instead of "read the manga" sort of person, but I may eventually get to it.

Though I did read that awesome Mado Nano Crossover fan manga; it felt like the closest to an official Madoka/Nanoha crossover one could get.

Quite a lengthy tale indeed, Nanoha fan of about 7 or so years myself. And I can quite understand your fondness for TOS and A's. As well as your initial feelings about StrikerS.

I've yet to truly soldier through StrikerS in its entirety myself, as I found it, years ago, to be so dreadfully boring. Ironic since I do love characters like Ginga and Subaru, as well as the Numbers.

And I'll admit I am much more opposed to even giving Vivid a chance. Principle thing for me, if it hasn't got Nanoha as lead, it shouldn't be riding off her name. Add to that, it (the manga) hasn't exactly got raving reviews.

I'll agree though, the movies were absolutely awesome and I am eagerly awaiting Reflection. Even if only because it finally features my own favorite character. Material-S/Seikou/Stern.

Anyhow, welcome to NanoFate.us, Seraphil.

I think what ultimately got me to give StrikerS and Vivid a chance is, well, it's a similar situation with the original series. The first half of the original Nanoha is less than stellar, and while I think it's much better appreciated after seeing the rest of the season and also A's, it's definitely something that could turn away someone who would otherwise enjoy the full show. Had I not given the original series a chance, I would have never discovered how much I love Nanoha.

With StrikerS, the first half-dozen or so episodes were my turn-off, for much the same reason as you mention, it was slow and boring and there were nothing really at stake. It wasn't until the sudden arrival of the Numbers where StrikerS really picked up for me(though I did enjoy certain early scenes involving Nanoha and Teana.) Much like the original, the second half was leaps and bounds more enjoyable than the first half.

Vivid was the same: the stuff I enjoyed the most out of it all happen in the latter half of the show(besides all the Takamachi Family scenes early on.) Nanoha does actually get a fair bit of screentime despite being a secondary character, and there's a rather nice NanoFate moment at the halfway point.

Is always nice to hear someone’s personal tale with a franchise you also love. Welcome to the site Seraphil.

I do have strong opinions about the quality of all Nanoha material post A’s which isn’t nice… but glad to hear StrikerS and ViVid Strike! Could do for you what they couldn’t do for me. And hope that Reflection can be just as good as the first two seasons and movies, which I still enjoy a lot.

There were really only two problems I had with StrikerS. The first is the cast was just too big; some characters could have easily been written out of the plot and nothing vital would change. Like the whole subplot with Erio, Caro, Lutecia, Agito and Zest.

My other problem is really quite minor but... Nanoha keeps forgetting she's left-handed! Multiple times she's using her right hand as her dominant one, and the most egregious instance was when she used A.C.S. Driver and she switches dominant hands in the middle of the animation sequence. It's clearly a symptom of the show having less quality control on the animation, but it makes me want to write a oneshot where Nanoha pulls a "I am not left-handed" moment akin to Princess Bride. It's a bit of headcanon for me now that Nanoha was fighting throughout StrikerS using her non-dominant hand as an even further handicap on top of her magic limiter.

Well, I really excited for reflection movie; Somehow feels like back to its roots moves. I was also disappointed in Vivid like you guys mentioned earlier; feels like away from its roots. But I really hope that Nanoha reflection can reignite the feelings of early Nanoha debut or spotlights back in 2004. :D

Edit: Sorry if I was being too active today since it is my holiday and be much more loving Nanoha franchise than ever before. Hope you guys will love this franchise more. I'm very looking forward for Nanoha verse progression and Reflection movie! \(≧▽≦)/

I agree with your opinion. Although I didn't really watch StrikerS that much, so I don't talk about Character part. But in Nanoha hand problem, I really agree that they really lost focus on quality control of animation.

Well my problem, for you guys is minor but for me is major. Nanoha franchise need to have balance of magics and physics or tactics. This 3rd Nanoha series almost feels like propaganda for me that "Magic is the ruler", "We ban Mass weapons"; In my opinion, but look into our current era, although we have problems of nuclear warheads, chemical weapons and etc, but that doesn't mean we can ban them all. And yet, we still can maintain or further prevent of nuclear warfare since after WW2. Mass weapon does not mean entirely dangerous, but you can also limit it. For example, non lethal weapons, like ADS (Active-Denial System)
does not kill people but for crowd control. And conflicting part is their "Cartridge system". Catridge based weapons mostly used Magic ammunition rather than linker core magics
to boost power efficiency. Since bullets are compressed with magic, in my assumption only; even non-mages can use catridge devices or weapons. That can be categorized as Magic based "Mass weapon". Not to mention, I watched Nanoha A's that these bullets can be refilled by mages like Shamal. Even more dangerous than gunpowder if they do not regulate it. (Creating gunpowder or creating magic bullets much more easier for mages; if you know what I mean.)

Well, I really fond of Nanoha verse weapons principle and their magics principle. So you guys can read many more of these principle in Off topic forum title named "What if only....". So if you like Nanoha verse, I really happy to hear that from you! ^^
